Description

With the great snow conditions in the Chartreuse this year I was keen to try a new route on the Chamchaude and explore the mountain after a reccie this winter. Used crampons to climb the Canyon which still has good snow cover and stayed on crampons to the summit. It was very cold at the summit with a bitter south wind.

Descent was windblown for the first 50 meters then pockets of powder down to the canyon which was spring snow. From the canyon to the woods it was heavy powder. Instead of taking the traditional path to the top of the pistes that everyone takes I continued straight down through the woods which are wide enought to ski to join the track that leads to the top of the drag lift.

Weather: Cold south wind at summit, light cloud

Access: Clear, pot holes on the road before the Col de Porte

Country: France Area: Chartreuse Trailhead: Col De Porte
