Distance: 4 km (2.5 miles)
Remarks: Risk of avalanche traversing the NE slopes below the summit of the Pravouta (avoid when there have been south and west winds).
Start at the Col des Ayes car park after the final left hand hair pin about 400 meters before the col. Climb north to the Col des Ayes (1538m) which is situated between the Dent de Crolles and the Pravouta summit. From here climb a steepish slope to your left (west), after about 150 m (1570m altitude) take a trail that crosses diagonally across the NE face of the Pravouta to the Col de Pravouta. At 1620m the trail leads into woods and climbs steeply to the Col. At the col turn south to reach the Summit at 1760m after about 10 minutes walking.
For the descent return to the Col then follow another path to the left (South-West) to fields with a large stone refuge (Habert de Pravouta) to the north. Follow the trail to 1500m where it turns left (South-East) into woods to join the Col du Coq (short climb). From here return to the car park via the road.
The col is named after the Roc Ptarmigan that live in the sector, especially in the sector surrounding the Habert de Pravouta. Certain areas are restricted in the winter months.
