Ski Touring in the Aravis

Situated between the Lac du Annecy and Le Mont Blanc the Aravis mountains are said to offer some of the best ski touring in France.  Certainly the rugged terrain provides a real high mountain feel without the excessive altitude and the valleys have a feeling of Switzerland about them.  We spent a long weekend exploring the possibilities.

Ski touring can be defined as skiing without ski lifts.  You hike to a summit or pass, admire the view then ski back down. It offers a sense of achievement and mental relaxation far from the buzz of ski resorts.  The large, snow filled bowls of the Aravis offer routes suitable for beginners and experts.  You can also explore the realm of ski mountaineering.  Cutting through cornices and abseiling down cliffs.  At the end of February we had more moderate aspirations.  Cover a few thousand meters of climbing and survive two nights in an icy refuge.
