In Yorkshire, as well as having “Trouble at T’Mill” they advise people to “Ne’r cast a clout till T’may is out”. A little further south European gardeners fear and respect the “Ice Saints”. Tomorrow (May 11) is the feast day of Saint Mamertius followed by Pancras and Gervais. Traditionally these are the last days for frost and gardeners wait their passing before planting sensitive flowers.

Like clockwork we have been blasted by what will probably be the last snows of the season. 10cm of new snow at 1500 meters in the Northern Alps and between 30 to 40cm at altitude. This has been accompanied by some gusty but strong wind from the north and west. This brought a late season bonanza for the few ski tourers prepared to brave the wintry conditions. All French lifts are closed except for the Aiguille du Midi which no longer has a safety rope on the ridge. The rest of the week looks much more springlike with clear skies and a good refreeze in the mountains on Wednesday. Time to get the gardening gloves out.
