Arve Drowning - Appeal for information

On the 8th of August 2004 a young British soldier, Blake Hartley, disappeared returning to his campsite after a night out in Chamonix.  Blake was an army cadet officer leading a five-day trek across the French Alps. He was a good climber and had previously spent 3 months in the Chamonix valley. Despite an extensive search at the time using highly specialized dog units no definite trace has been found of Blake. French police believe he fell into the Arve river and drowned. At the end of May police divers once again undertook the difficult job of searching this river’s many pools and backwaters around Bonneville.

Blake’s mum Sally says that a body was spotted in the river at Vougy to the north of Bonneville. She is looking for anyone with aerial photographs of the river from Bonneville to the Rhone taken during August 2004. These can either be from a plane, glider or paraglider or taken from the surrounding mountains. There were extensive storms at the time and the level of the Arve was unusually high. She would like to establish where the river was in flood as his body may have been carried into one of the many lakes along the edge.

If you have any information that may be of help you can contact Sally at: blakehartley@hotmail.com She feels this is her last hope of finding out what happened to her son.

DNA tests have proved that a bone found in the river Arve belongs to Blake Hartley. Joseph Dancet resident of Vougy and aged in his 70s believed he saw Mr Hartley’s body in the river in 2004. He has spent much of the last couple of years searching the banks for clues. He stumbled on the femur in December 2006.

---

We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Mr Hartley’s family.
