Major pounding for the Southern Alps

The Southern Alps, or more particularly the border region with Italy, is once again getting pounded by a major storm centered over the Mediterranean. The weather system has brought 80-100cm of fresh snow to the mountains above 2000m and increased the avalanche risk to maximum today.

Meteo France has issued an orange warning for the region and the risk is forecast as High tomorrow. If you were planning on heading to the region by car you should think again. Access to the Queyras has been blocked today following a landslide on the RD902 Guillestre. The road is open this evening but there is a risk of further slides. The Col de Vars and Larche are both blocked by avalanches and there are problems on the Montgenevre following a problem in the new road tunnel. The RD947 and RD441Roads beyond Abries are also closed to avalanche risk.

Leila Shahshahani from Volopress reports that “the villages of la Monta and l’Ecalp have been evacuated by the authorities and the area has been closed. The guardian at the refuge de l’Alpetto says there has been 2 meters of fresh snow and the refuge is shut”.

The road to Isola 2000 has been closed again due to avalanche risk and six young Dutch ladies had a chilly night after a massive roof avalanche from a nearby building seriously damaged their chalet. Trapped in the building garage, where they has sought refuge they phoned a friend in Holland to give the alert. The call then passed via a clearing center in Belgium before being passed on to the local authorites in the Alpes Maritimes. The only problem, the young women didn’t know the address of the chalet and a team from the PGHM had to search the resort in the dead of night.
