Zag is back

It looked like game over last Autumn for the Bourg St Maurice ski company with their original designs. The company had been doing well with 2000 pairs of skis sold per annum however they faced a funding gap after the withdrawal of one of their shareholders. They maybe did well to miss the miserable 2006-7 winter. The company was refinanced by their Pyrenean rider Franck Bernes-Heuga but keeps their shaper Stéphane ’ZAG’ Radiguet on the team. We caught up with Steph at the Mondial.

Zag has even managed to produced some new models for 2007/8 and has updated the old skis. After persistent problems that plagued the popular Zag Rouge the finish is noticeable better as is the construction. The skis are wood cored with 5 layers of fiberglass beneath the based. Here is a quick look at the 9 new models, including two destined for the girls.

Lady Toy A new product from Zag and designed as a single quiver ski for the park, piste and powder. For girls who want everything. With 77mm underfoot and available in lengths of 153 and 163cm it may lack a bit in deep snow.

Lady Gold Girl’s version of the Gold, it retains the Gold’s agility on piste but its predilection is deep snow.

Heli Gold Based on the old Zag Gold the Heli is stiffer. It is inspired from snowboard designs and has excellent float.

Big Zag have made the Big stiffer for this season.

Purist Successor to the ill-stared Rouge. An all round ski with good grip. Aimed at skiers who will be spending a lot of time skiing fast on piste.

Mutant A new twin tip, a men’s version of the Lady Toy (obviously they avoided the obvious mistake of calling it the Lady Boy!).

SLAP Le Style Libre Arriere Pays (Freestyle Backcountry). A true twin tip with enough float to haul ass in pow or to land jumps.

H112 Developed for the Zag freeride team. A tool for expert riders.

I would like to get those skis for review. We have reviewed Volkl skis (http://homeboyski.com/2007/10/15/volkl-0708-ski-review-series-part-i-volkl-katana) but those I have never tried out.

You will have to go to Bourg St Maurice in the French Savoie if you want to review them. Zag’s website is:

Maybe they can tell you if there is a Finnish importer for 2007/8?
