Avalanche close to the col d’Izoard

A women in her forties, resident of the Alpes de Haute-Provence, has been seriously injured by an avalanche in the Haute-Alpes. The slide carried the woman some 300 meters down the slope. The accident occured yesterday morning at 10h30 around 2500 meters altitude above the col d’Izoard close to Briancon.

The CRS des Alpes came to the scene by helicopter. The victim was found using the signal from her avalanche transceiver after around 30 minutes under the snow. She was with two other people at the time of the avalanche, neither of her friends were hurt by the slide. The avalanche risk was 2 (Moderate) on a scale of 5 but the strong winds over the previous days had lead to the accumulation of snow in some sectors. It is believed that the group triggered one of these snow slabs.

On Friday a party of three young climbers, two residents of Grenoble were killed after loosing their footing on the Mayer Dibona in the Ecrins mountains.
