UK scientists have found an 8000 cubic km bulge of fresh water developing in the western Arctic Ocean in the Beaufort Gyre. The water is largely run off from Russian rivers that has been whipped into the bulge by anti-cyclonic winds. Scientist fear that if the fresh water is released into the Northern Atlantic it could affect the warm currents that keep Europe temperate, plunging the continent into an arctic winter.
