Avalanche in Val Thorens

This morning around 10am a male skier was caught and buried in an avalanche in the “Entonnoir” (funnel in English) section descending towards the Lac du Lou. The small group of skiers, without guide, took the Boismint lift and entered the valley via the ridge above the lift. We were preparing to aid in the search when it was announced that he had been found by the avalanche rescue dogs.

Reports vary already but it seems he was not equipped with an avalanche transceiver. He was heli-lifted to the medical centre in Val Thorens. A friend there was told by doctors that he was in intensive care and had spent nearly 30 minutes buried.

The avalanche risk is 3, but ski patrol were blasting all morning and some big slabs departed from the controlled blasting. Around 30cm of snow fell throughout yesterday and during the first part of the evening, accompanied by quite a lot of wind.

Thanks for the detailed report. The sketchy conditions this year are catching out some badly prepared skiers.

No problem David ... Just a correction, it wasn’t the Entonnoir but was between the top of the piste Boismint and the Entonnoir. Not sure why ski patrol said that earlier.

I took some photos afterwards, I’ll try to post them tonight.

Given the number of slabs that had gone with the PIDA in Courchevel this morning its not entirely surprising!
