Cheers!

Any recent news on the Haute Route conditions? Apparently there will be at least a long walk down the Arpette valley to Champex, but how is the section between the Prafleuri hut and the Dix hut? We have scheduled to start on the 24th of April, which is still almost two weeks away… I am afraid there wont be much skiing left to be done at the time… Is it still worth going, what do you think?

Thanks!

Latest news I have from a group that has just finished is that the skiing is not great at the moment (but that could change if we get a bit of snow). Some of the climbs and descents have very hard snow and you need to be careful - use ski crampons or even crampons (if not too crevassed). At other times the snow turns into soup, you can sink to your waist if you take your skis off. The descent from the Col du Chardonnet needs 50 - 60 meters of rope. From Chamex to BsP you need to take a taxi or bus. Climbing from BSP you find snow at 2150m then it is skiing all the way to Zermatt. At Zermatt the snowline is at 2200m, you need to walk about quarter of an hour from the end of the HR to the Zermatt ski runs to ski back down to the village.

The snow is heavily tracked in places and where these are refrozen it is not fun, at the same time the route is relatively obvious and the crevasse danger doesn’t seem too high. Scenery in good weather is stunning.
