The Dauphine Libere is reporting that a car has been buried by an avalanche on Friday evening in the gorges du Bachelard close to the village of Villard-d’Abbas in the Alpes d’Haute Provence. The four occupants escaped without injury after one of them was able to dig a tunnel and raise the alarm. The other occupants were trapped for 3 hours.

Hard to imagine anyone escaping from the car shown in the photo alive!

I heard the woman who dug the tunnel used the plastic stopper from a ski pole to dig. Imagine digging 2-3 meters through that heavy snow!!

Just heard that a local extreme Brit telemarker Roy X (X as he doesn’t like being referred to on the web) was in the car along with three touring buddies. They had headed south for a few days skiing. Incredible escape. The photo is the actual car they were in, amazing they survived. Will post more when I hear a fuller account.
