Stewart, the MD of Facewest, a UK specialist backcountry and mountain retailer, has sent us their latest beacon review
Interesting to note the very good range of the Tracker II which is now on a par with the best digital beacons. It will be interesting to see the figures for the recently announced Ortovox 3+ which switches the transmit antenna depending on orientation - although this would actually make other beacons look good.
A few points:
FW > It is still possible to do effective multiple burials with the Tracker 1 it is just there are no features used to do it.
not strictly true. there is no masking based on transmit signature of victim beacons but it does have a special mode which can be used to mask the current strongest signal to locate secondary beacons. FW know this as they mention it on the TII review.
It seems the S1’s software updates have overcome some of the initial teething problems. This transceiver has had an even longer gestation phase than the Tracker II but seems like a solid tool although the Ortovox 3+ slated for the autumn looks very interesting for amateurs.
