Nordic Skiing: Oratoire in the mist

Thu, 9 November 2017

Technical

Distance: 7.9 km

Slope Aspect: East

Trip Reports

Vertical Climbed: 400 meters (1,312 feet)

Description

I'd heard that they'd pisted the road to the Bergeries on Tuesday night for the Cross country skiers with the Kässbohrer PB 300 (that's a medium sized piste basher). As this is the only game in town it seemed like a plan for lunchtime. I was worried there would be snow on the road up but it was clear although the wet autumn leaves are slippy.

There is 5cm of bashed snow at the bottom of the climb. A couple of patches of tarmac but you can ski to one side and some icy looking snow in places. Above 1400 meters the skiing is very good both climbing and descending. Hopefully this snow will stick around this year although as it is only the 9th November nothing is less sure.

Weather: Low cloud, a bit cold, some sun at the top.

Access: Clear, still have my summer tires on.

Country: France Area: Chartreuse Trailhead: Col De Porte
