Ecrins

Ski Areas > Southern Alps > Ecrins

The Ecrins mountain range is situated between the Hautes-Alpes and the Isère departments and straddles the frontier between the Northern and Southern Alps. The name originates from the Occitan dialect los Escrinhs although did not come into universal use until the creation of the Ecrins national park in 1973. The area has many high peaks and glaciers although only a single summit, the Barre des Ecrins (with its sub-peaks of the Lory and Dôme de neige), reaches over 4000 meters. The Ecrins are bordered by the Oisans to the north-west, the Champsaur to the south-west and the Briançonnais to the north-east. To the south-east is the major river Durance.
