The Ardèche department is situated in the Massif Central region. Close to the airports of St Etienne and Lyon and the major road valley of the Rhone the Ardèche still retains its wild beauty. The hills rise to 1600 meters (higher than in Scotland!) but are generally rolling. Better known for white water rafting, in winter you can practice cross country skiing, snow shoing and there are even three small ski stations of which La Croix de Bauzon is the most developed.
