Clinometer

A clinometer is a device that is used to measure the angle of a line of sight above or below horizontal, for example a snow slope that is to be climbed or skied. An accurate idea of slope angle is important for backcountry travellers because the principal risk from avalanches occurs on slopes angled between 25º and 45º.

Clinometer built into Compass

Simple clinometers can be built into a compass but are less accurate compared to a sighting unit where the user looks though an eyepiece to see a horizontal line and a reading of the slope angle.
