The Swiss made Barryvox Opto 3000 is a dual antenna avalanche beacon. The two antennas are perpendicular to each other and provide greater precision in searching. In particular the Opto 3000 can indicate the direction the searcher must turn towards and not just show when he is on the search path. This speeds up searching. The dual antennas also help precision with fine searches.

In addition to digital it also offers an analogue search mode. This offers a longer range which is interesting where a large area has to be covered quickly, for example for professionals arriving at an avalanche with no 'last seen' point to work from. The analogue mode can also be useful for distinguishing between multiple burials, the Barryvox produces different tones for each victim. It is also possible to operate the beacon in simultaneously in digital and analogue modes. This offers significant advantages to avalanche professionals and experienced users. The Opto 3000 can also be set-up to automatically switch from analogue to digital when the victim is within a preset distance. This gives the advantage of an increased analogue search footprint with digital speed of searching. The device can be configured to revert back to transmit mode after a period of activity. This is an important point where there is a risk of secondary avalanches on the search site. However it can be confusing for inexperienced searchers who may not realise that their beacon has switched back to transmit mode.

The Barryvox Opto 3000 can also be operated as a pure digital beacon straight out of the box and is thus also suitable for less experienced users. In digital mode there is also a multiple burials indicator. The device is very compact and light, weighing just 170 grammes. The device features the usual power-on self test (POST) and battery monitoring. Battery life in excess of 200 hours complies with the ETS 300718 standard.

In short the Barryvox Opto 3000 is a highly configurable avalanche beacon aimed at the professional or experienced backcountry user who is prepared to invest some time to get the best out of this avalanche beacon.
