Avalanche Warning : Exceptional snowfall in frontier ranges.

A weather system is still very active in the Southern Alps today and is bringing precipitation in the from of snow above approx. 2200 meters altitude. At that altitude there is between 30 to 60 cm of fresh snow but in the border areas the fresh snowfall is even greater.

Over a very localized area. Especially the East sector of the Haute-Maurienne (Savoie) and the East sector of the Queyras (Hautes-Alpes), the snowfall is exceptional: there has been around 150cm and in some places 200cm or even 250cm of fresh snow over the last 36 hours. Large natural avalanches are to be expected. These may occur on unexpected slopes and be unusually large.

For the end of the week, despite an improvement in the weather this afternoon and over the weekend people traveling in the mountains should exercise a maximum of caution in exposed areas.
