Avalanche death in the Massif Central

A 49 year old skier has been found dead yesterday afternoon near the col de Rombières in the Cantal, part of the French Massif Central mountain range. There is no official avalanche bulletin for the region but the piste patrol at the nearby ski area of le Lioran estimated the risk as High (4/5) with a lot of snow drifting.

The skier was reported missing on Saturday night. The rescue services think the avalanche happened sometime on Saturday afternoon. The victim, a local man, was described as "experienced". The search operation mobilized 20 rescue workers bu they were unable to use a helicopter due to the poor weather. A spokesman described the conditions as "extremely unstable" with spontaneous avalanches during their search.
