Haute Savoie prefecture warns of avalanche risk at altitude

The prefecture of the Haute-Savoie has appealed call for prudence in the mountains for Wednesday and Thursday, citing a “high” avalanche risk. The warning applies mainly to the Mont-Blanc massif. With the snow and return to winter weather over the past few days, between 40 and 60 centimetres of snow has fallen over 3,000 to 3,500 meters altitude. Wind has complicated the situation leading to the formation of slabs creating an unstable snowpack.

They have also warned hikers that they may encounter wintry conditions from 2,000 to 2,200 meters altitude which can make trails hazardous even with the return to summer conditions.
