Orange avalanche alert for Western Pyrenees

Meteo France has issued another Orange avalanche alert for the Pyrénées-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrénées departments with the arrival of fresh snow. The snowline will rise to around 2000-2400 meters at the end of the episode and will humidify the snowpack. Wet snow avalanches are to be expected. There is a very high avalanche risk with large spontaneous avalanches likely . Backcountry travellers are advised to check road openings and to respect warnings in resort.

The avalanche risk is also High (4/5) for the Savoie department with weak layers in place. The snow-pack is expected to lose strength over the next 24 hours except on low, south facing slopes. Natural and skier triggered avalanches are likely on all slope aspects. A small surface slide may trigger weak layers deeper in the snow-pack.
