Avalanche Engineers

A little bit of snow science in the lab and in the field. The engineers are looking at a particular type of weak layer formed by surface hoar (aka frost). It forms in anticyclonic conditions where there is a strong temperature gradient on the surface of the snow. A thin weak layer it features high spatial variability making it hard to detect; as a consequence it probably takes out more snow professionals than any other weak layer.
