Ski Tourist Killed at Ceillac after Transceiver Malfunction

A ski tourist, resident of the Hautes-Alpes department has been killed by an avalanche this afternoon at Ceillac in the Queyras.

The skier, a 55 year old, was with a friend at 2,400 meters on the south face of the Marcous.  He was wearing an avalanche transceiver but his friend was unable to locate him and had to wait for an avalanche dog and its handler to arrive on the scene.  His body was found at 14h00 under only 50cm of snow First reports suggest that the transceiver was in the transmit position but had malfunctioned after an impact with a tree.  The rescue services transported the victim’s body to the hospital at Briançon.
