Hi guy’s ,
We would like to share our free riding experience in Bulgaria. We are a group of boarders that like to travel around to find the best back country free riding conditions from Europe to Alaska
and we have done most of the top places in the Alps , Canada or the States but last winter we had the opportunity to visit a friend in ...Bulgaria.
I have to admit that we were quite skeptical since this Balkan country is very little known for it’s skiing but we decided to please our bulgarian friend who happens to be a very good boarder and to give it a try...We landed in the snowiest week of the year (!)in Sofia and we spent the week between the 2 main resorts Borovetz (Rila mountain ) , and the village of Bachevo , next to the biggest ski resort in BG, Bansko (Pirin) -1h drive from the capital. What an experience to be waken up by the sheep’s , the cows , the horses in this unique village - definitely to be seen..
Well , even if the Bulgarian mountains and slopes difficulty are closer to the Pyrenees than to the Alps (max alt 3000m) we had a fantastic snow conditions with some serious free ride ( resorts slopes are for beginners and medium skiers but the real off piste is tricky and requires a local guide and expert skills)and great time ( most restaurants and bars are still very cheap and the food ,if you are well advised , is deliciouses -close to the turkish and greek cuisine)...and the ladies...everything you have probably heard about how beautiful they are is true...+ some very impressive free riders too..
Anyway we definitely recommend Bulgaria as a close European free riding destination on very affordable price and we found a cool local video site http://www.proamsports.bg where there are tons of videos of free ride in the local resorts - just go to the ski or snowboard sections.
