Despite the avalanche risk of just 1, (2 above 2300m) a French soldier has been killed by a slab avalanche in the Seuil des Rochilles sector above the ski resort of Valloire yesterday. The soldier was part of a group on a training exercise. Recovered by his colleagues in a critical condition he was taken by Police Helicopter to Grenoble where he was DOA. There is a continued risk of slabs at high altitude, notably on north faces, today.
It is the second fatal avalanche in Valloire, in the Maurienne valley, this year. On the 20th January a 32 year old French man was killed by a slide and in February last year 5 soldiers were caught by a slide in the area killing one, again on a risk 2 day.
