Snow and avalanche report 20 February 2016

Relatively little recent snow. Wind is creating some localized avalanche risk in the Isere and Hautes-Alpes. Relatively stable elsewhere this weekend. Skiable snow is found from 1000/1200 meters in the Haute-Savoie, 1100-1300 meters in the Isere but forests are unskiable under 1500 meters in the Isere. With up to 4 meters of new snow since 1st Jan at 1800 meters conditions are good at altitude but below average in the 1000-1200 meter zone... starting point for a number of ski tours.

There have been 7 fatal avalanche incidents to date, normally there would be 12. This, in part, can be explained by the poor skiing conditions in December (first fatal incident on the 3 January 2016) and perhaps due to the poor weekend weather keeping skiers at home or on piste. There has only been a single "amateur" ski touring fatality this season, 4 off piste.
