Serious avalanche at Auron

An off-piste skier is in a serious condition after an avalanche at Auron in the Martime Alpes. A search near Briançon is on-going for woman missing since yesterday and there was an incident in Chamonix.

An off piste skier was caught by a large avalanche below the Dôme sector at 13h30 in the ski resort of Auron near to Nice. The itinerary is very popular. The skier was found after 30 minutes under the snow in a critical condition. The 17 year old from Grasse was taken to hospital in Nice after a major search and rescue operation. A 33 year snow border was able to escape the slide.

Update 16 April 2013 Unfortunately the man died in hospital. 33 winter sports enthusiasts have been killed by avalanches in France since the start of the season. With high temperatures conditions continue to be unstable with poor refreezes and a lot of snow at altitude. The avalanche risk is 3 moving to 4 at midday.

Auron

A search is on-going for a 38 year old women missing since yesterday. Police believe she may have been buried by an avalanche in the Dormillouse sector. The operation is complicated by the high avalanche risk.

On Sunday an off-piste skier was injured by a slide on the Tete de la Chevrette in the Aiguilles Rouges near to Chamonix.
