A snow shoe trek ended disastrously for Philippe Raynal, a 32 year old professional snow shoe guide from Pau after he was hit by an avalanche.

Snowshoer Falls to Death in the Tabor
A ski tourist fell to his death from cliffs in the Tabor mountains in the Hautes Alpes. The victim, a 45 year old man, left Névache at around 6H30 for a trip on snow shoes and skis and should have been back at the end of the morning.
In the early afternoon his family alerted the rescue services. A helicopter found tracks at about 2,000 meters altitude in the late afternoon. The body was recovered later by the police.

Barèges Bans Off Piste
Ian has just returned from Barèges where he reported ideal conditions on the slopes but the Pic du Midi was closed and the local authority had also barred access to the off-piste sectors by a bye-law because of the risk of avalanche.

Alive
The four snowboarders, missing since Monday near to Aime in the Beaufortain mountains were found alive at 15h40 this afternoon. They had set out on snow shoes to climb Mont Rosset on Monday but were caught by bad weather.

Bumper snowfall for the Pyrénées
The Pyrénées is having another excellent winter. Over the last week there has been over 180cm of snow at 2,400 meters altitude. A record since 1986 according to the ski resorts. However the strong winds have brought a high risk of avalanche, with skiers in la Mongie and Puymorens having to be evacuated.
