Savoie sells family jewels
Princess Margaret’s family were not the only ones selling the family jewels last week. During a session of the Savoie regional council a decision was made to sell part of Courchevel ski lift operator S3V (Société des Trois Vallées), the jewel in the crown of Savoyard skiing. The department will reduce its stake from 73.4% to 51% and hopes to raise 23 € million which it will use to develop small and medium size resorts in the Savoie. It will also sell land worth 31 € million.

Espace Olympique Lift Pass Confusion
One of the great things about skiing in the Tarentaise resorts is that if you buy a six day (or more) lift pass you can spend a day at each of the other resorts providing you have some transport. The PisteHors.com team have done this, using les Arcs as a base we hopped around the area from Val d’Isère to Mottaret. All was pretty straight-forward if somewhat time consuming when we did it but reader Brian Rodda has had a different experience.

Sainte-Foy doubles size of ski domain
The opening of the Marquises chair will double the area of pistes in the youngest of the Tarentaise’s ski resorts but the project has not met with universal approval. Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise has planned 15 million € of investment over the next few years including a new area of ski runs under the Camp Filluel to the west of resort but environmental and local pressure groups have described this as “a very risky bet at the expense of the local environment”.

Savoie Dries Out
With the recent snow and rain it is hard to believe that the Savoie is currently in its third year of drought. The residents of Saint-Gervais close to Mont-Blanc have been told to reduce their water consumption and both Megève and le Grand Bornand faced restrictions in 2005. In February les Arcs had to be supplied with bottled water for a week after the supplies became contaminated.
Could this be the future for the Alps?

La Plagne – Bellecôte; Exteme Construction
Night falls early in the mountains in November. Floodlights splutter into life casting a eerie glow over the site. With the recent fresh snow it could be at an Artic base. In fact it is 3050 meters altitude on the Bellecôte glacier above the ski resort of la Plagne. Possibly the most extreme building site in Europe.

The Riots that Ruined a Ski Resort
As France sweeps up after the worst night of rioting in the country since May1968 we take a look back at the Soixante-Huitards and the effect they had on one resort, Le Corbier, affectionately dubbed St Germain des Neiges.

A Lifting for Alphaville
Les Ménuires is seen by many as a prime example in the failure of French ski resort planning. A desolate concrete jungle perched high in the austere Belleville valley. The resort was the brainchild of Maurice Michaud, dubbed the ‘Snow Dictator’ by the journalist Danielle Arnaud. Michaud and a team of young architects schooled in the Bahaus tradition had designed the first purpose built French resort: Courchevel 1850 in the immediate post-war years. This was a real laboratory of ideas and experiments.
