The Keys to Paradise

cles paradiski
Christmas is just around the corner so it is time to look out some gifts for Santa to bring. The resorts of la Plagne and les Arcs now have some 40 years history behind them. Time for a couple of generations of skiers and snowboarders to discover the best the off-piste has to offer.

Backcountry Snowsports Insurance

It is getting close to the new season and the end of the year. In the office we are currently checking our annual subscriptions: ski magazines, avalanche bodies, clubs and of course ski insurance.

Yo’ Bro!

At PisteHors we like to believe that we earn our turns and perhaps as a consequence love the rootsie feel of small ski manufacturers with their personalized planks made in limited production runs. Just as long as the skiing experience isn’t compromised.

Testing Times in the Andes

PMGear is pretty stoked up by their new Bro Model Ski so we decided to take a closer look at the offering from this US startup.

Revision for the Pure

The innovative Silvretta Pure ski touring binding certainly picked-up a large number of awards from the industry last season but failures with the alloy toe-piece and binding height adjustment bolt left some ski tourers fuming. Silvretta decided against a general recall for the Pure to address these issues. We were told that there were not sufficient failures to warrant this. However the company and their suppliers were reactive in replacing breakages.

Ortovox X1 - Simpler than Possible?

Wasn’t it Albert Einstein who said “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler”. One wonders whether the Ortovox X1 digital avalanche beacon has been made just too simple.

Naxo Binding Woes

broken-naxo.jpeg

After broken toe-pieces and rear cocking levers it seems even the cast pivot bars can break on the Naxo nx01 binding.  Christian L was exploring Ste Foy’s extensive backcountry, the ideal terrain for the Naxos with its short climbs, when to his surprise he saw that the front link rod had snapped.

Ski Touring Sans Frontiers

Anyone who has made a ski or snowboard tour on a border region in Europe will know just how frustrating maps can be. A nice detailed 1:25000 series French IGN map suddenly turns into a vague ‘here be dragons’ sketch reminiscent of the middle ages the second it crosses over the border.

Naxos Nachoed

naxo-busted.jpg
We are used to glitches with new ski touring gear but when a piece of kit lets you down it can still come as a shock. This is felt even more deeply when negociating a tricky descent far from civilisation.

Scarpa Matrix - The 10,000 meter test

This is the first in our series of 10,000 meter tests.

The Matrix is the latest ski touring boot from Scarpa, the respected Italian mountaineering equipment manufacturer.  Perhaps better known for their competition boots, the Matrix is designed to respond to ski mountaineers demanding both uphill and downhill performance.

Doing the Vallée Blanche

The Vallée Blanche (White Valley) is probably the most famous stretch of off-piste skiing in the world.  Apart from the initial scramble down a narrow ridge it is not the most challenging route in the Alps and is often considered a good finalé for skiers and boarders of quite modest skills.
