Luz Cauterets link

The Pyrenean ski resorts of Luz-Ardiden and Cauterets have completed a virtual link up for the 2006-7 season. Following a recent agreement the ski areas will be under joint management. The day to day operation will remain with each domain but it is hoped that the link will be the start of much closer cooperation between the ski areas which could result in a physical link.

Ax and Andorra to link

Following the construction by Pomagalski of the Bonsacre gondola lift that links the town of Ax-les-Thermes to the ski slopes the Ariege resort has experienced a property boom and the lift company has doubled its turnover over the last five years. The local economy has also been helped by some exceptional winters and a new autoroute link with Toulouse.

Pic du Midi opens access

It has been a subject of fierce debate in the Pyrenean ski resorts of la Mongie and Barèges for the last few years between local freeriders, guides and politicians. Should the restrictions on riding the Pic du Midi be lifted? Despite rumours of a relaxation in the rules only skiers or snowboarders accompanied by a guide have been able to use the cable car and descend the vertiginous slopes.

Crap Shoot for Andorran Ski Mountaineers

Andorra would no doubt prefer the press to focus on its Grandvalira domain linking the ski areas of le Pas-de-la-Casa, Grau Roig, Soldeu, El Tarter and Canillo, its luxury hotels and its ultramodern high-speed chair lifts but the Shanghai of the Pyrenees shares another problem with the oriental boom-town, serious water degradation. Or rather in Andorra’s case it shares its problem with its neighbours France and Spain much to their annoyance.

Andorra - Expand or Die?

Situated high in the Pyrénées, close to the border with the principality of Andorra, is a large bowl. It is one of those secret spots. Ignored by the package tourists making their way to the slopes and tax free shops of Andorra. Novice ski tourers can train on the gentle 500 meter climb to the Pic de la Mina knowing that they are not far from civilization if things go pear shaped. Experts can explore the many couloirs that descend from the ridgelines. The whole area is reached after a short climb from the ski lifts of the French resort of Porté-Puymorens.
