17th Derby de la Meije
The Derby de la Meije is a freeride competition open to all comers. Over a 1000 racers from more than 20 countries, some in fancy dress, race down from the Dome de la Lauze (3512 meters) passing through the mythical Vallons de la Meije to finish 1668 vertical meters down the mountain at the Chal Vachère chalet. Registration opens in January, 2004 and anyone over 18 can apply. There is no upper age limit!

Rendez-Vous des Etoiles: 3rd edition
The third edition of the Rendez-Vous des Etoiles takes place over the 17, 18 & 19 December 2004 on the legendary 2877 meter Pic du Midi de Bigorre at the heart of the la Mongie-Tourmalet ski domain. The snow had already fallen in abundance so we are hoping for a superb kick-off to the Pyrenean season.

Avalanche Day in Grenoble
The French Association for the Study of Snow and Avalanches (ANENA) is organising an avalanche security day on Saturday the 27th of November. The event starts promptly at 8h45 and is dedicated to snow and especially avalanche risks and gives all the information, or nearly, that traveller needs to be aware of the dangers during a trip in the back-country.

Saint-Lary Xtrem freeride
Saint Lary ski resort in the French Pyrénées hosts the Xtrem Freeride over the weekend of the 11 to 13th of March 2005. The event is organized as a ‘raid’. Teams of 2 riders (ski, snowboard and télémark) fight it out on the best backcountry spots in the station. The winner will be the fastest team over 5000 meters of descent.

North Face Freeride - 2005
The les Arcs leg of the 2005 Freeride World Tour is scheduled for the 28th February to 4th March 2004. Last year the event was moved to Kirkwood in the USA due to poor conditions. Let’s hope the slopes of the Aiguille Rouge are more accommodating this year.

Monster Clean-up on Mont-Blanc
65 tons of rubbish was collected on the slopes of Mont-Blanc on Sunday during the second clean-up operation of the summer organized by Saint-Gervais city hall. 500 volunteers of all ages scoured the slopes between 2,800 meters and 4,300 meters altitude. The rubbish was placed in sacks and heliported to the valley.

International Snow Science Workshop 2004
The 2004 edition of the biennial International Snow Science Workshop is upon us. This event, held over 6 days in Jackson Hole, Utah, reunites leading experts in the field of avalanche research. The conference organisers received over 130 papers, of which 63 have been selected as main presentations and 70 others will be poster presentations. The event attracts snow scientists and avalanche practitioners from many countries, as well as a strong presence from North American backcountry enthusiasts.

Mondial du Ski and Snowboard - Les Deux Alpes
The traditional French season opener, the Mondial du Ski and Snowboard will take place over the autumn half term week at Les Deux Alpes. The 15th Mondial du snowboard will be held between the 23rd and 25th of October and the 7th edition of the Mondial du ski between the 30th October and 1st of November.

Warriors of the Galibier
The season seems far too short. Resorts shut their lifts while there is still tons of snow on the ground and just as the days are getting pleasantly long. What to do? Ski or snowboard touring? Bwah too slow! Well there is one band of snowsports gonzos that have discovered how to prolong the season. The road-gapers.
