Le Grand Raid 2006
Evolution 2 in Tignes is once again organizing its Grand Raid competition, now in its 14th season. This year’s freeride event is held over six qualifying “Derbys” with the final on the 7th-9th of April. The first event is this weekend in Val d’Isère and Tignes, Evolutions 2’s playground. They regularly take clients down the many backcountry itineraries in the resort.

Men in Tights or Ski Mountaineering Competitions
It is a big thing in Europe. Rubbing embrocation on your legs, wearing a skimpy lycra suit and climbing up your local mountain to ski back down on gear so flimsy that you wouldn’t let your kids learn on it. It is the antithesis of freeride and now even snowboarders are getting in on the scene.

International Freeride Film Festival
The Pyrenean ski resort of Saint-Lary is holding its International Freeride Film Festival from Thursday 19th to Saturday 21st January. The best freeride films of the moment will be shown in the Le Lary Cinema from 6pm. Workshops on the mountain environment, security and avalanche transceivers will be held during the day.

Tourmalet FreeRide
The weekend of the 14th/15th of January sees the 6th Tourmalet Freeride event. On the Saturday a number of groups accompanied by local riders will be able to discover the ski area. Sunday is dedicated to freeriding over the entire area from the Ayré slopes to the vertigenous routes from the Pic du Midi observatory.

Snowlegend Freeride Safety Weekend
Snowlegend is once again organising its backcountry safety weekend in la Grave over the 14th/15th January. The aim is to increase awareness amongst freeriders of the risks and responsibilities in avalanche territory. The event covers how to estimate the risk of avalanche and decide if a situation or route is dangerous and to understand and apply the corresponding precautions on the terrain. Participants will also learn about search and rescue and how to use their avalanche beacon, probe and shovel in the case of an accident.

Henry’s Avalanche Talks do Méribel
Val d’Isère based ski instructor and avalanche expert Henry Schniewind is extending his famous weekly avalanche talks to Méribel for the 2005-2006 season. The established Tuesday Introduction and Thursday In-depth talks in Val d’Isère will remain along with daytime beeper training. Henry recently won recognition from the French National Avalanche Research Association (ANENA) when he was invited to a conference to explain to avalanche educators, guides, piste directors and security his highly successful format.

Free Respect - les Deux Alpes
For the seventh successive season the ski resort of les Deux Alpes is running its weekly information sessions on the risks presented by snow both on and off marked slopes. Over a Monday evening and Tuesday the event presents information on best practises for safe riding, responsibilities of both skiers and snowboarders as well as a better understanding of the ever changing mountain environment.

The Derby Trophy 2006
Most people who read PisteHors have heard of the Derby de la Meije – a frenetic race down the slopes below the Mythic Meije mountain in the backcountry resort of La Grave but what exactly is a Derby? The term is usually applied to an open race. In skiing terms it is the antecedent of today’s Professional Freeride competitions, an event open to everyone whether they are on skis, snowboards, monoski, luge, pro or amateur.

Rendez-vous des Etoiles - 4th Edition
This week sees the 4th edition of the Rendez-vous des Etoiles held on the legendary Pic du Midi in the Tourmalet Ski Area. The event will feature 20 pro riders including Dorianne Vidal, Xavier De Le Rue, Candide Thovex, Iker Fernandez and Nicolas Droz. This year’s Rendez-vous is bigger and better, a free test village, nighttime freestyle, films, safety sessions and also a chance for the public to take a freeride trip. The riders will be exploring the 5 side of the Pic over 5 days, 10km of vertical.

Snow and Avalanches - a Film
A few weeks ago we mentioned that the French avalanche research association (http://www.anena.org) was extending its series of Avalanche Days countrywide this winter although some were disappointed that Grenoble, self-styled capital of the Alps, was not on the schedule. To make up for this the ANENA is showing their new Snow and Avalanche film next week.
