Two fatalities in l’Espace Killy avalanches
The return to better weather after a weekend where over a meter of snow fell at altitude accompanied by strong winds from the west then north-east tempted skiers and snowboarders out in force today. The result was two deaths and two serious injuries in avalanches incidents in Tignes, Val d’Isère, Courchevel and la Plagne.

Extreme avalanche risk in Savoie this weekend
The fresh snow, rising temperatures and strong winds from the west have moved the avalanche risk to Extreme (5/5) in the Savoie and Haute-Savoie departments for Saturday. Météo France has warned all backcountry travellers to avoid any steep routes (>30 degrees) and even on low angled routes travellers should keep well clear of steep slopes above, especially routes traversed by known avalanche paths.

Police warn of avalanche dangers after two deaths
There were two further avalanche deaths yesterday in the French Alps and police have warned off-piste skiers and snowboarders as well as ski mountaineers to be extremely careful especially on north faces and above 2000 meters where the cold temperatures have weakened the snowpack. There has been 40-60cm of fresh snow in the pre-Alps and the avalanche risk is considerable across the whole region.

American killed in Montgenèvre avalanche
An American has been killed in the Plane sector in the Vallon de la Doire by an avalanche today at 13h00. The man was with two other Americans off-piste skiing close to the resort of Montgenèvre when they triggered a slab avalanche at around 2500 meters altitude.

Gourette in shock after avalanche tragedy
The Pyrenees had escaped relatively unscathed from the carnage unleashed by avalanches this season. That was until yesterday. At around midday as a couple of skiers approached the Arre-Sourins ridge close to the Anglas chairlift a slab avalanche was triggered beneath their feet causing two slides, one on the resort side of the ridge the other towards the lac d’Angas. The men were climbing with crampons with their skis attached to their rucksacks.

Black Week for the French Alps
The discovery of a ski tourer, reported missing yesterday morning, brings the number of avalanche deaths to 11 since Monday, 9 of them in the Southern Alps alone. The ski resort of Pra-Loup has suffered four deaths off-piste, 3 of them due to avalanches.

4 dead, 5 injured in series of avalanches
Two teenagers have been killed this afternoon and another is in a very critical condition in Pra Loup, the body of a ski mountaineer was found close to ski resort of les Orres this morning by the mountain police (CRS) and an 18 year old has been killed skiing off-piste on Mont Joly close to the ski resort of Saint-Gervais in the Haute-Savoie.

British skier killed by Puy Saint-Vincent avalanche
A family group of four skiers on a tour of the Tête de l’Oreac have been caught by an avalanche close to the ski resort of Puy Saint-Vincent in the Hautes-Alpes today. Godfrey Davis, a British national aged 45, was killed by the slide.

British ski tourer found dead
The body of a British ski tourer has been found today by searchers. The man had set out alone on Monday from the village of Méolans-Revel in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department to climb the vallon de l’Averq on skis.
