Study Shows 2002 2nd Hottest Year Ever

The World Metrological Organization (Organisation Météorologique Mondiale) has released a study showing that 2002, on a global scale, is without doubt the second hottest year since records began in 1860.

Surface temperatures were on average 0.5C hotter than the average taken from 1961-1990.  In France, 2002 was both hotter and wetter in many areas.  The Haute Savoie, where many of France’s world class ski stations including Chamonix, are located registered an overall 3C rise whereas it was actually colder than normal in the Pyrenees.  This probably accounted for their bumper ski season.  We have a special report on global warming and its consequences for skiing.
