Season Worker Killed by Karellis Avalanche

Four off people, skiing off piste in the Combe de Messolar to the right of the ski resort of les Karellis were surprised by an avalanche at 17h15 today. Two of the skiers were able to escape the slide and give the alert. A large rescue operation was put in place consisting of the piste patrol, instructors from the Ecole de Ski Français, Volunteers, the Mountain Police and a dog handler and his avalanche dog.

The Combe is hard to access. One of the victims was able to free himself from the slide. The search for the second victim, a snowboarder, lasted more than an hour before the avalanche dog found the body. The victim was a season worker, aged 24 years and originally from Rennes in Brittany. He was not wearing an avalanche beacon. He was employed as a chef in the Azureva-Post and Telecoms holiday centre.
