Extreme Avalanche Risk in Serre Chevalier

Météo-France and the CEN have issued an extreme avalanche warning for the north of the Hautes-Alpes department.  The area includes the ski resort of Serre Chevalier amongst others and La Grave.

Heavy snow has been falling since Friday in the area.  The avalanche risk is 5/5 in the Pelvoux, Champsaur and Thabor mountain ranges where close to 1 meter of snow has fallen.  The risk is 4/5 in other areas in the Alps including the Savoie and Isère.  Off-piste users are advised to use extreme care and avoid slopes over 25 degrees and avalanche run-out zones when travelling.  The majority of avalanche accidents occur at risk 3 and below and skiers and boarders are advised to not let their guard down when going off piste.
