Balkanization

The Balkan states were once said to be a number of small, faraway countries about which we know little. Sad to say, over ten years after the Iron curtain fell open, this is still largely true. Bulgaria is probably best known to English package tourists who ploughed their first tentative curves on the beginner slopes.

The country also has a long cultural heritage and the Rila and Pirin mountains offer some challenging and spectacular ski touring and snowshoeing. Ivo Stoilkov, who runs Inteco travel has sent us a superb article giving an idea of the possibilities.
