Avalanche Days - 2005

Following last year’s outstanding success with over 500 subscriptions for just 200 initial places the ANENA (National Association for the Study of Snow and Avalanches - http://www.ANENA.org )has decided to renew and enlarge its programme for this coming season. This time the ANENA is heading out from its home base of Grenoble with training days in the Pyrénées, Maritime Alps and even Paris.

So first of all what is an Avalanche Day? The ANENA has adopted a Canadian idea. That is a whole day before the season gets underway to learn about the dangers of avalanches and the rules of the backcountry game. A day gives enough time to explore the subject without requiring complex logistics and expense in terms of time and money for the organizers and participants.

The days are split into four sessions.

1. What is an avalanche and which terrain and weather factors lead to their formation?
2. Human factors, group management and route choice.
3. Decision making, how to interpret the avalanche bulletin
4. Search and rescue in case of an accident

The days are in French and would benefit any backcountry traveler, be they skiers, snowboarders or snowshoers. Each session will be lead an experts in the field and there will be time for questions and answers.

The avalanche days are scheduled for:
• Annecy 5 November • Lyon 19 Novembre • Paris 26 Novembre
• Nice 3 December • Toulouse 10 December • Pau 11 December

If last years success is anything to go by it will pay to book early.
