2 Snow Shoers Killed by Cornice Fall

Two snow shoers were killed after falling 400 meters when a cornice broke away above Méribel (Savoie), according to a spokesman for the Mountain CRS (Compagnie Républicaine de Sécurité).  The accident occurred on the ridge above the glacier du Borgne on the Gébroulaz side at 3,042 meters altitude.

The victims, both 20 years old, were part of a group of four young people, one a resident of Méribel, who had left from the top of the télécabine of Mont du Vallon and had followed the ridge for around 1 km when the cornice broke under their feet.  The two others in the group, who were at some distance, were uninjured.  It is believed the group were snowboarders who were climbing to an off-piste run.
