2011/2012 Accident Statistics

As promised a long while back here are the backcountry accidents reported to us during the course of last season for France. The report covers the period October 1st 2011 to September 30th 2012. Climbing incidents are only included where an avalanche was involved. The overall number of incidents is no doubt much higher however we believe that the figures for fatal incidents is complete with 23 deaths in 15 incidents including 9 deaths in the Mont Maudit avalanche in July 2012.

No, I will add it in. There are probably quite a few falls that don’t get reported. This kind of information is invaluable. The avalanche fatalities should be complete though.
