Freeskier Shane McConkey has been killed in the Dolomites after a ski/BASE jump stunt he was performing went horribly wrong. It appears that one of his skis failed to release and he was unable to deploy his chute. McConkey is survived by his wife and young daughter.
McConkey had recently starred in Steep, an documentary examining the pioneers of extreme skiing. Co-star Doug Coombs died during production of Steep in a ski accident at la Grave. Like McConkey Jean-Marc Boivin who also featured in Steep died in BASE jumping accident rather than on one of the extreme routes he pioneered.

Very sad news. A great loss for skiing. He will be missed by all who love the mountains as he did.
