Promoting Best Practice in Avalanche Awareness

Serious avalanches throughout the French Alps last season killed 55 people and injured many more. It was the worst year for avalanche accidents since 1971 and prompted the French Minister of Sports to describe the deaths as “unacceptable” and to comment there was “often a lack of sufficient mountain knowledge” amongst off-piste and backcountry enthusiasts.

The statistics really emphasis the need to take the proper precautions and there should be no excuses for a lack of mountain knowledge. UK Wintersports specialist, Mountain Tracks has been at the forefront of promoting Avalanche safety for the past five years and offers dedicated Avalanche Awareness courses for recreational skiers and snow boarders keen to head off-piste. The courses have been specifically written for Alpine conditions by leading avalanche experts, Roger Payne and Julie-Ann Clyma.

The 2½ day Foundation course is ideal preparation for anyone planning to ski/ride off-piste and equips participants with essential knowledge and skills to understand the principles for safe travel in avalanche terrain. The Advanced course is for more experienced skiers and boarders and over 4 days focuses on practical knowledge to further develop participants’ ability to travel safely in all terrain.
