The Swiss guide Erhard Loretan had been killed and a client seriously injured while climbing the Grünhorn in the Swiss Valais. In 1995, Loretan became the 3rd man to climb all 14 8000 meter summits. The two men were on a ski tour but had left their skis at the Grünegghorn to climb the summit ridge when they fell 200 meters.
