There have been a number of avalanches since Thursday, fortunately none of them fatal but a warning that conditions are unstable in the Southern Alps, Corsica and Pyrenees. About 10cm of fresh snow is expected overnight from 1000m from the Vosges through to the Alps.

Two ski tourers, part of a group of 8 from Spain, triggered a slab on a North facing slope under the Col de la Montagne Haute close to the Mourre Froid in the Champsaur. The slab was 100m wide and some 70cm deep! One of the group suffered a broken leg.

On Friday a ski tourer was caught by an avalanche on the north side of the Pic de Barran close to Hautacam in the Pyrenees. His two friends were able to rescue him thanks to his avalanche beacon. In a separate incident a group of four ski tourers triggered a slide in the Combe Ratin close to the Pic de Bure in the Dévoluy range on a north-east facing slope. The slide measured 150m wide and 80cm deep.

On Thursday a skier was buried by a slide at St Etienne en Dévoluy. His companion was able to rescue him thanks to his beacon. The victim was buried under able half a meter of snow.
