A rucksack and glove belonging to a British man missing for five days in the Cinto range in Corsica have been found next to an avalanche at 1900 meters. Rescue workers, from the police and specialist units of the fire service, started a large search after friend became worried on the 29th. Nothing has been heard from the man since Christmas day. His dog has been found inside the refuge d’Asco.

A rapid probe of the slide has not revealed anything but the search was due to restart at 6h30 this morning. The 28 year old man had set out on the GR 20 (Alta Strada). He had been reporting in by mobile to friends in Calvi. The police were able to triangulate his mobile phone to a valley in the Asco area at 2000m altitude. A ground based search was organised as rescue helicopters were unable to fly in the zone due to high winds and poor weather conditions.

Bad news but not unexpected. The missing Brit was found under 2 meters of snow this morning. The body was found by a probe search. The victim was attempting the GR20 from North to South.

It turns out the dead man was a 30 year old American with links to Pasadena who had been living on the island for the last six years. He had been posing as a Brit because his visa had run out. The man was homeless and live in a tent near to Corte. He travelled regularly in the mountains with his dog.

The gentleman in question was a very good friend of mine.  We grew up together and had unfortunately lost touch over the past few years due to circumstances beyond our control.  He was a great adventurer and never lacked for a good challenge.  He also had strong ties to the Michigan area.  He is missed by his sister, parents and many close friends and family who know in our hearts that he is safe and happy now, even though his adventure on Earth was cut much too short.

Take Care my good friend. We all miss you dearly TJ.
