Old news now. 12th December so last Wednesday in Serfaus. A 40 yr old Chech guy was killed. Group of three, two boarders and one skier . He was first in and triggered a 150x300 meter slide with a 30cm headwall. Everyone had beepers. Victim was buried under 120cm of snow. His buddies could only roughly located him. it took the piste patrol to recover him after 20 minutes. Victim died at 23h00.

Our snowpack investigations confirmed our suspicion that the avalanche has gone off on a sliding surface from depth hoar crystals and edged in a thin rain crust that has formed on 11.11.2012. This weak layer is especially in the regions south of the Inn between about 2200m and 2800m in the west exposures over N to O sometimes strikingly pronounced. Large remote triggering in these altitudes are currently on the agenda and point to the generally unfavorable snowpack.
