The Hautes-alpes avalanche bulletin makes for some impressive reading

Recent snowfall

Since the 3rd of November evening to monday morning a weather system from the south, the east has pounded the southern alps. The snowline has varied between 2200 and 2400meters on most ranges except the easth of the Thabor and east of the Queyras where the snowline was 1600/1800m. The accumulated snowfall, according to our monitoring stations, is 1-1.5 m in most ranges, 2m in the west Champsaur, Pelvoux and Thabor and more than 3.5 meters in the Eastern Queyras in the Haut Guil/Mont Viso sector.

A further 70cm will fall in the Mont Viso sector tonight. The snowline is between 1600 to 2000m from the east to west of the area.

Needless to say, the avalanche risk is maximum with spontaneous avalanches over the next 12-24 hours and slabs at altitude under the influence of the Lombarde (east wind).
