We reported on the front page about the death of a ski tourer due to a fall and a lucky escape by an instructor in an avalanche.

In Les Diablerets an off piste snowboarder was caught by a slide under the summit of the Becca d’Audon in the “ticoteuse”. The man had followed tracks of two other skiers. He then removed his board to climb higher when he triggered a snow slab. The avalanche occurred at 11h40. The rescue effort was hindered by the instability of the snow pack and only his snowboard had been recovered at dusk when operations were suspended. A resident of Bern, his wife reported him missing when he failed to turn up to work in the afternoon.

Another avalanche occurred at Titlis. The slide was triggered by a group of off piste skiers. The lift company is considering a civil suit against the skiers.

A spokesman for the Swiss Avalanche Institute said that although the snow pack was relatively stable (risk 2 to 3 on a scale of 5) skiers had to appreciate the local conditions.

More info today in le Bleu Matin. The body of the missing snowboard had not been recovered yesterday. Early yesterday the area was bombed to dislodge any further slabs which threatened the zone. Rescuers are complaining of the bitter cold -20C. The rescue workers have probed the entire avalanche site but now need to do a finer grained search.

Local experts said it was “madness to ski the route… winds were around 130km/h and had been blowing for a week, you could see slides coming down the mountains”.

According to Bleu Matin the two freeriders who had preceded the missing man had followed the normal route which was fairly stable. However they had been advised by a local not to go off piste that day. The incident has both saddened angered local freerider. They can’t understand why the man took the route and why he wasn’t wearing an avalanche beacon.

it’s a very popular line as it’s blindingly obvious from the cable car, I’ve seen people in difficulties around there before mostly with the gradient and getting caught in terrain they can’t handle with poor route finding. you would expect it to be pretty dangerous right now
